ASICS Fleet Pre-London Half Marathon News

The race to take part in the 2010 ASICS Fleet Half Marathon is well and truly on: entries have now opened, giving runners the opportunity to sign-up and raise money for the event’s official charity - Leukaemia Research.  

Often seen as a warm-up for the London Marathon, which takes place a month later, the half marathon is jointly organised by Fleet & Crookham Athletics Club and the local branch of blood cancer charity Leukaemia Research.  The fleet of foot and running novices alike are invited to tackle the 13.1 mile course as part of the charity’s running team, the Banana Army – so called because of the distinctive yellow t-shirts worn by its runners.

Leukaemia Research’s TVTimes celebrity running team, which includes many famous faces from the big and small screens, will also be returning and running alongside the public in the event’s 29^th year. Since the event began in 1981, the same year as the inaugural London Marathon, the ‘Fleet Half’ has raised more than £120,000 for Leukaemia Research.

The 2010 race – due to be held on Sunday 21 March  – is dedicated to the memory of Colin Gostelow, the event’s founder, who continued to play a key role up until his death from a brain tumour in July this year.

It is wonderful that so many people keep showing up every year to run for us, helping raise awareness and money for vital research into leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.”
